DAY 2: Systemic Symptoms, Scleroderma Awareness Month 2016

DAY 2 - Symptoms

Scleroderma can be systemic and can affect the entire body, depending on the type of scleroderma present in the body. This can be identified by specific blood screening and other diagnostic tests — see later on in the week for more information on this!

The entire body is affected in the diffuse form of Scleroderma, with a never-ending list of symptoms to manage and try to control. The current treatments available are targeted at symptom suppression only, before moving on to organ transplant or stem cell transplant.

Raynaud’s is caused by vasoconstriction of the small blood vessels at the extremities. Most scleroderma patients present Raynaud’s symptoms, but it is possible to present with Raynaud’s symptoms and not present with Scleroderma. See later on in the week for more information on this.

More investment is needed in research for this chronic, debilitating autoimmune, rheumatic diagnosis, which hijacks the entire body.
